The role of the therapist during this process is in your control. You may want a collaborative partnership where you work alongside the therapist to obtain your desired outcomes. Others may prefer a more direct approach where the therapist leads, guides, and coaches in a way that is believed to be most beneficial for you. As the client, you will work with the therapist to choose which approach is best for you and know that you have the freedom to change this at any time throughout the therapeutic relationship.
There is no right or wrong choice, only what provides you with the greatest sense of autonomy and feeling that you are capable of making the changes you desire. Regardless of what technique or approach works best for you, therapy will be conducted in a way that is both ethical and in your best interest. This does not mean it will always be easy, but lasting change rarely comes without sacrifice and hard work.
